ENG: The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) is the larger of the two main unionist political parties in Northern Ireland. Founded by Ian Paisley and currently led by Peter Robinson, it is currently the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly and the fourth-largest party in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. However, it came third in the European Parliament election 2009 in Northern Ireland, with its candidate elected after both Sinn Fein's candidate and the candidate of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and the Conservative Party. The Democratic Unionist Party decision to back the government's plan for 42-day detention of terror suspects helped deliver major investment for Northern Ireland, Peter Robinson said today.
