Estonia's culture minister has confirmed that the country is set to continue with plans to revamp the national museum.

Laine Janes has confirmed that the Estonian National Museum will continue to be located in the Raadi district of Tartu, reported Postimees/LETA.

The plans to create a new building had faced opposition from the European Investment Bank, who believe that the Estonian National Museum should be relocated to the capital city of Tallinn in order to boost visitor numbers.

However, Mr Janes stressed that it was vital for the whole of Estonia to benefit from the country's growing popularity with overseas tourism and investment.

"To build the Estonian National Museum in Tallinn is not a recommendation that can be taken seriously. The Estonian National Museum has been in Tartu for a hundred years and will remain there," said the culture minister.

The museum was founded in 1909 and is holds a comprehensive collection of Estonia culture-related exhibits.
