Mike Huckabee spoke to hundreds of supporters at Purdue University Tuesday night about the importance of life.

"We cannot allow our country to get to the point where we decide that one life is expendable and another is valuable," the former Arkansas governor said. "We need to recognize the worth of all human beings, not only in politics, but in culture."

Huckabee, who contended for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and now has a weekly show on the Fox News Channel, was the keynote speaker at the annual Tippecanoe County Right to Life banquet at the Purdue Memorial Union.

Tippecanoe County Right to Life is the local affiliate of a statewide pro-life organization that focuses on abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. - Už jste hlasovali v tomto hlasování pro Mike Huckabee ? - More than 650 people attended the event.

"To see both of these ballrooms filled from front to back is very encouraging. There is hope for this country," Huckabee said.

Huckabee said he was invited to speak at the banquet by Right to Life officials and that he accepted the invitation because of the issue's importance.

"This is not a political issue, but a moral issue," he said. "Life is valuable at all stages, no matter if the person is 8 years old or 80 years old."

Christian Steffey, chairman for the banquet, said the purpose of having Huckabee speak at the banquet was to take a grassroots approach and make the community aware of the organization.

"The point of the banquet is really to re-energize and rejuvenate local community efforts in the pro-life movement," he said. "We hope to have a larger effect both locally and throughout the state.

"The time is truly now."

Huckabee said to show his commitment to the efforts of Tippecanoe County Right to Life, a portion of proceeds from his new book, "A Simple Christmas," will go to the organization.

Steffey said he first got involved with the organization about a year and a half ago because of his "firm belief on the sanctity of life."

"If we can't respect life, all of our other moral issues take a back seat," he said.

Lafayette resident Alison Kent said she is supportive of the community taking a larger role in the pro-life movement.

"Events like this are very important," she said. - Změnil tento argument Váš názor na Mike Huckabee ? - "The loudest voice is the one that's heard, so we have to be as loud as we can."

Scott Blacker of Lafayette said he has been supporting Tippecanoe County Right to Life for a long time.

"Some people really don't understand what it is to value life," he said.

For Huckabee, the pro-life movement is the nation's most important.

"The problem in our country isn't economic, it's about valuing life," he said. - Znáte detaily Mike Huckabee ? - "You can pass all the stimulus packages in the world, but until we fix that problem, it won't make a difference."
